Bibledit Windows Companion, as the name already implies, is the Windows leg of Bibledit. There are some Windows programs that do not communicate directly with Linux programs, except when it is done through an intermediary program. The windows companion is such a helper program.
It is a program based on the code of Umhloli. It has been adapted to work together with Bibledit. It provides scrolling of Paratext and BibleWorks with Bibledit. It also has many other tools, but these are not supported. Most of these tools will eventually be moved to Bibledit.
Any application can connect to Bibledit Windows Companion through TCP/IP. You can connect by typing this command: telnet localhost 51515. Once the OK message from the windows companion comes in, you can find out about the commands by typing help followed by enter.
There can be two Bibledit Windows Companions running at the same time. One on the local workstation, through Wine, and one on a virtual machine running Windows. This way the Windows programs, whether they run on the virtual machine under Windows or whether locally under Linux, they can all communicate with Bibledit.
For the unsupported tool in Bibledit Windows Companion to work properly, it should point at a Paratext project directory. It can open and work with a Paratext project. An unsupported script has been provided with the bibledit package, that copies the files from Bibledit to this Paratext project, or from this Paratext project to Bibledit. This copying is needed at times to keep the files synchronized. The command to use this script is bibledit.copy --companion to copy the files to the Windows Companion, and bibledit.copy --bibledit to copy the files to Bibledit. This script will not work out of the box. It needs to be edited to copy the right project to the right location.
